Hello. I am trying to replace the stator on my 40HP 1992 Mercury outboard and cannot get the flywheel to come off. I have th correct puller. I removed the center bolt, installed the puller by threading onto the flywheel and then tightened down on the crankshaft, but the flywheel will not come off. Any suggestions what else I can do? If I have tried tapping gently with the hammer but dont want to use alot of force. Also, should I be threading the puller completely onto the flywheel or just a few turns and then turn the center bolt down onto the stator?

any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

The bigger part of the puller should be on top of the little crankshaft protector. It should be in enough to you have good force once the small bolt is sent through the puller. Then give er a twist. You removed the nut that holds the flywheel to the crankshaft?

Remove flywheel nut with impact wrench Place steel round plug inside hollow threaded puller Screw puller onto flywheel all threads Insert bolt down into puller Tighten Usually they slowly lift I've never had one pop like a car hub Be careful anyhow

So here is a picture of the flywheel with the main bolt removed. and I also included a photo of the puller kit that I purchased. So I screwed the big black flywheel puller bolt into the flywheel and then the rounded bolt into that and tightened both down but the flywheel will not budge...any ideas what I might be doing wrong?
