Ok, looking for advice (and want to vent!)...
I ordered a reman engine for my 1999 Bryant from Promar the first week of June. We couldn't see the casting number, so I wound up ordering their "CH262M-04" unit - "1996-2000, 4.3liter standard rotation, 6 bolt t/c no crank sensor, 8 bolt intake with balance shaft long block".
They sent us an engine that was non-metric, and flat tappets. My mechanic told them it's the wrong type of engine...told them it shoukd have metric sizes, as well as roller tappets. We sent that new engine, as well as my old engine, back to them to fix the issue.
They are now wanting to charge me an additional $1100 to correct the problem.
Does this sound right to y'all on this board?
I'm very much tempted to just cancel the whole thing and order me a long block from Michigam Motorz (I was advised on these boards to use MM, but had already placed my order with Promar :-( ).
What are y'all's thoughts on this? Thanks!

Did they ship the engine that you Ordered? Your post implies you may have ordered the Wrong Engine. If that the case, it was your mess up, not theirs, and if there is a Price Difference, you would be expected to pay it.

But I ordered a replacement engine for a 1999 4.3 engine. Surely that should've been a metric block and roller tappets? That's what I'm trying to figure out...
I did tell them up front I could not provide a casting #, but gave my year, and other parameters (8 bolt intake, std rotation, no crank sensor).

If they sent you an engine that wasn't the one you ordered, but charged you the price for the one ordered, then they shouldn't be trying to Jack you up for more, in fact they should be paying the return Shipping, and the cost of shipping the Correct Engine. Is there an Office in your State for Consumer Protection? Better Business Bureau in the Area? Time to turn up the Heat on these Shysters

I guess my bottom-line question is: should or should not a remanufacturer of marine engines have known, even without a block casting number, the proper engine I needed, since I provided them with all the info I stated in my original post of this thread? Weren't Mercruiser 4.3 engines using roller tappets by 1999? And metric threaded bolt holes and fittings?
That's what I'm trying to figure out - why would they have sent me such an engine? My mechanic tells me the engine they sent was more suited for a mid-80s S-10 hotrod or some such, rather than a boat.

So, which one of their (Promar) engines should you have ordered? I assume it is one of their catalog'd engines? Is the price that much different?

Are they wanting shipping fees in that amount? Did you pay shipping to return?

if you did indeed order this engine https://www.promarengine.com/engine-details.php?pn=CH262M-04

then they didn’t send you the engine ordered… as long as you paid the listed $3299… if they charged you $1100 for a cheaper wrong engine then it would be fair to ask fir the difference if they pd return shipping…
Yes, that is the engine I ordered, paid the full price.
After my mechanic called and told them the problem, they had both engines picked back up - the one they built and sent me, and the one out of my boat - no charge to me. But then they send me an email wanting an additional $1100 to correct the issues.

I ordered one of their catalog engines (CH262M-04)...no difference in price...and they picked up both engines - the one they sent me, and my old one.
Now they want $1100 to correct the issues.

So does anyone know what year Mercruiser went metric with their 4.3s? As well as when they quit using flat tappets and went to roller tappets?
Thanks!

I think roller lifters was in late 1980s. Metric was maybe 2003-2007 or so? Dont get hung up on the metric. My boat original had a metric 4.3 090m casting… the metric threads were on the flywheel cover bolts, Side motor mounts and starter bolts. all other fasteners on front of block were SAE.

i repowered with a 5.0 V8, which was all SAE i bought about $20 worth of grade 8 bolts, some studs for flywheel cover grounding points, and inch starter bolts for another $25, i moved all the accessories over using the original fasteners on my new block.

so yiu should have no issue if they give u a non metric block.
