Hi guys! I have a 280 outdrive with a GM 5.7 in a 1978 Kona Mini-Daycruiser. Apparently, I had blocked cooling passages and the block did not drain properly when I winterized...I have a cracked block and need to replace the motor.
I have never pulled the motor in a boat~ Trucks and cars yes...I have looked on YouTube for a video and struck out. I don't know what I need to disconnect to pull the motor. If I un-bolt after the bellhousing, will the motor just slide out??? Do I have to pull the Outdrive first??? I am ordering a manual online today, I don't think that has motor pulling info in it though. I looked at the PDF of the Volvo Shop Manual and (unless I missed it) there was only info on pulling the outdrive.
I would think, pulling the motor would be a 1 or 2 hour project at most. Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Howdy

Hope the VP guys show up soon to add to my limited knowledge with the 280.
As with most all marine motors, you pull the drive first. Then disconnect battery, fuel lines, exhaust, electrical engine connector, throttle and shift cables, ground wires. Then remove bolts hold front and rear motor mounts then lift it out.

I would think that the VP engines pull about in the same manner as the Merc's. Pretty much as AD described.

You will need something that can safely lift at least 1,000 lbs.

if you look close, you can see the gantry i built for around 75 bucks plus the cost of a chain hoist from harbor freight. 2- 2''x10''x12' for the header and stacked 2x4's for the support posts. worked great!

remove the drive
unbolt the two bellhousing mount bolts
unbolt the motor mounts from the stringers
disconnect the wiring from the main plug
disconnect fuel line
disconnect grounds
disconnect starter lead
disconnect throttle cable
disconnect exhaust at the lowest clamp on the bellows at the y-pipe

if you have all the tools necessary on hand, a friend to help, you can have the drive off and the motor on the ground in about an hour, maybe hour and half for an experienced person. novice, looking at 3 hours. leave as much attached to the engine as possible and it will cut down on time. with a cherry picker to help with the outdrive, i was able to have my drive off and engine on the ground by myself in 2 hours. i have done several though so i knew what i needed going in. good luck

Thanks for the input guys!!! Like I said...I ordered the manual from iBoats right after I posted~~~ I will start planning my attack~ I have already disconnected the wiring, the exhaust manifolds and the plumbing. I need to read up on pulling the drive BEFORE I start taking bolts/pins out~~~

You don't need to remove the whole drive...just the upper gear case assembly. Do some searched on here. There are a few threads that describe the procedure,

unbolt the two bellhousing mount bolts
??????? You talking 270/280 drive here? Sounds like SX.

The engine removal procedure is completely different than a Volvo SX or a Mercruiser. You need to remove the bolts on the clamping ring between the bellhousing and transom assembly.

I just opened my Seloc Repair manual...I am glad I bought it~~~ So...now I see what the "Upper Gear Case assembly IS and it looks like it should be relatively simple! I was just a bit gun-shy...I was afraid I might damage something if I just tried to "Caveman" it~~~ Thanks!!! The book listed 3 different ways to pull the motor. Pulling the upper gear case is the preferred method so that is what I will do!

DonS has a write up on how to do it on here somewhere as well. It's pretty easy. I have done it a few times back when I had a 270 drive.

DonS is boating in the heavens, so you will have to do the search to find the wisdom he has left for us.
