This is for a 1997 mercury 30hp. Mercury uses a black/yellow wire and a ground for their switch. I found the black/yellow wire at the engine harness,it does not run to my ignition switch because I'm using a Mercury accessory switch meant for teller models. The switch has four spots to connect to every other one marked ether M or I for magneto and ignition. So my question is do I still use the engines black/yellow wire and if yes do I connect to an M or I? If I use a ground do I connect to an M or I or is there an altogether different way I need to wire this? Thanks for any help.

You have a dual purpose switch which can be used on battery ignition system (I/O or inboard) or a magneto system such your outboard. You do not connect anything to the "I" terminals. You use the two "M" terminals. Yellow/black on one terminal and ground on the other/ It doesn't matter which wire you put on which "M" terminal.
