Welcome to iboats. :)

Have a look at the top of this page and you'll see a link for manuals. If you like, hop on over to your public library and see what they have. Many carry the same ones offered here. Choose which publisher you prefer. When you tackle that starter, only replace it with a marine starter and solenoid. You may be able to get it rebuilt. Check the Yellow Pages. Auto starter/alternator rebuilders can do marine units as well.

welcome,

with regard to your starter if you get it rebuilt make sure to reseal the unit at every joint as unlike a car the moisture will get into it and destroy it in no time at all...service manuals are available in most boat shops or through links on this site..common problems with the 140 are head gaskets, exhaust manifolds and risers (especially if used in sea water) check the thermostat waterpump and impellar and you should probably change the points condenser and rotor ..have fun..

sounds like my story, bought a 85 wellcraft 170 american that had a bad startor. after changing startor found that it had no spark. when it finally started, it had a knock. but after rebuilding it, the little 140 runs like a beast! best of luck to ya!
