All summer I've been trying to diagnose a problem with my 98 Evinrude 115 SPL. I am having intermittent problems reaching WOT, but the problem is becoming much more consistent.

I have finally ruled out fuel starvation and carbs, so write those two off. This must be ignition related. Now bear with me, I want to explain everything this engine is doing to give a clear picture.

Looses about 1300 RPM from normal WOT and seems to lack torque. Engine tone sounds lower. Problem seems to start somewhere around mid - 3/4 throttle.

Usually runs fine for the first 10 minutes (but not always). However, as soon as I shut it off and restart it while the engine is warm, the problem begins to show itself. So- runs great at first, I shut down, even for a second, start back up and it sucks again.

Sometimes after hitting a big wave or jolt, the problem disappears... unitll the next big wave or jolt, then it sucks again.

This part really has me suspicious-
If I pull either plug, top or bottom, from the port side, the engine runs real rough (as to be expected on three cylinders), but I can give it throttle without stalling.
If I pull either plug, top or bottom, from the starbord side, I can only get to about 1/4 - 1/2 throttle before the engine stalls out.
Is this normal because of firing order or does it sound suspicious?

This made me think power pack. Engine has only one power pack. Replaced it, problem still there.

Swapped coils from left to right, problem did not switch sides.

All plugs have been replaced, all wires are fine.

My guess is that this leaves me with just the stator and timer base. But I'm not the ignition pro, that's why I'm asking this question.
HELP!!!

And thank you very much-

-Chad

Invest in a shop manual. It's got testing methods for both the stator and timing ring.

c/6

Hooty

Do you have a service manual for your motor?
You have covered quite a bit.A defective stator could cause symptoms like yours. You can have it tested at an OMC dealer.
From your description, your problem sounds electrical.Check all wire connections for tightness.Check all ground wire's coming off stator/powerpack and coils.Check for loose connections.Post back. :)
Make sure those carbs are not contaminated inside.
You may want to check spark on starboard side.Pull one plug and ground to motor(hold the boot w/a glove).Start motor with plug out, shade plug and observe color.Should be blue in color. If not, suspect coils or stator....You should own a repair manual if you don't have one.Good luck. :)

This may or may not help you ,but have you checked out leaking plug wires? These wires are often scuffed when the cowl comes on or off and can leak intermittantly.Take a long handled ,insulated screw driver, a jumper wire and tape that wire to the blade of the driver and connect the other end of the wire to a good ground. Then ,carefully, with the engine running, pass the end of the driver along and around those wires. If you hear a miss and see an arc or this thing noticeably drops a cylinder at one certain spot you,ve got it.This test works alot better at night.
