Thanks to JB and others, I did find an outstanding buy on a '78 model 6 horse Johnson. The seller was a retired engineer from the Lockheed Skunkworks and he had an immaculate shop, immaculate house and yard, and the motor was carefully wrapped in layers of plastic sheeting and neatly stored in his garage for the last ten years. It was VERY clean inside and out. He said the motor had the gas run out of it, and some lubricant put into the engine when he stored it. The rubber on the cowling is still in great shape and the hoses as well. I am concerned about interior seals or whatever could age with time? The seller did not have a place to start the motor but gave me a money back guarantee if there was anything I did not like about the deal, then bring the motor back and he would refund my money, no questions asked. I believe him as he is that kind of guy. He even had the receipt of purchase and the cancelled check from 1978!

My question is what should I do before and after I try to start the motor to make sure everything is OK? I don't want to run the engine if I should run some fresh fluid in the water intake or whatever before I start it. I will get fresh gas and the proper mix with oil before I start. I saw on eBay where some people run transmission fluid into the water intake and hand turn the prop for several minutes before starting. Is this the right thing to do?

What would you do if it were yours????

Thanks,
McPhee
