Boat: 1980 McKee Craft 17' Southporter
Motor: 1977 Evinrude 85 hp

I recently acquired this boat and the motor had a Chrysler SS prop on it. It is not a thru-hub exhaust prop and it seems a miracle the motor wasn't burned up. The previous owner must have never run it with this prop. I removed the prop and started the motor 1st try. Good/even compression across all cylinders. I've ordered a water pump kit and Vernatherm for standard maintenance. Will be going through the carbs as well.

I haven't splashed the boat yet so I have no baseline (RPMs, holeshot, top speed, etc.) Can anyone recommend a prop for this setup for starters? I prefer to err on the side of caution and I'm not interested in achieving maximum speed. I will be buying a spare so I can make adjustments with that prop.

Thanks for the responses.

mitzysman: The lower unit is in the shop getting the skeg straightened. I'll reply with details on the Chrysler prop when I get it back.

As noted above.

Here is your prop... Solas Rubex $109.98 13-3/10" x 17" pitch will be a very nice cruising prop... or non-rubex for $10 cheaper.

It included the thrust washer, spacer and the Hub kit. The Rubex advantage here is you can get a barebones rubex replacement prop for $70 delivered without the hub, about what a repair would cost you.

If you expect more than light load cruising, then the 15" pitch version would help with load carrying abilities, water sports, acceleration, etc.. A 15" 4 blade is suitable as well for load carrying, water sports, lower planing speeds for rough water and better tracking.

I know Mckee's are tanks, but can also absorb water, like any whaler style.
