Need choke to start??

I have an '89 Cheetah 1650LS with a i/o Mercruiser 3.0L 130HP with an Alpha 1 outdrive and it runs fine. The only thing I am wondering about is I have to choke it to start it. Even after running for a while, when I shut down, to restart, I have to choke it again. It will turn over fine without the chock and will start every once in a while without it but for the most part, I have to choke it. (By "choke it" I mean push the button in the middle of the throttle stick and put the stick in a slight forward position) I am new to the whole boat owning spectrum so any help would be appreciated. Everything is fine on the boat and if I continue as is, it will be fine with me. I just wanted to know if any of you have something in mind that I need to change. Thanks for your help! ;)

all your doing is adding a little gas to help it start, mine does the same thing. they all have automatic chokes nowdays.
