Re: Need computer guru!!!

uh, SBN, a 66Mhz cpu is not worth using as a backup. MHO

i haven't even supplied my own parents with pc's, cause the free junk pent's were thrown in the trash- by me. if you're gonna mow the lawn, don't try it with a butterknife...

you might gofer win95 again, if so. i'm with you on that quest too. i might have those OEM floppies around somewhere.... but you could do better with that "breadbox pc" you posted :D

i'm just a micropeon, remember? not many diff opinions here yet... i'd not even consider anything less than a 333Mhz, and for the avg person, i'd put that at 500Mhz... with win98se. it can be done cheaper, quicker, but only if the pc is used for data storage, and you only load the skeleton OS...

sorry, just checked my boating email acct
yep, its me, ebb ;)

After it goes through all it's stuff and tells me some files are damaged or corrupt, it goes to the command prompt.

Is there anything I can type in there to help me?

I don't have anything for a Prolinea.
I have the Presario models.

Oh well...Worth a try.

Did you need another boat anchor? It would be worth a few strange looks at a crowded lake when you heaved it into the water (with a short un-tied rope of course)!

H.

Re: Need computer guru!!!

Compaq put a hidden boot partition on all of their computers that it looked at before loading the OS. Unless you have the original restore disks then you gotta get rid of that partition to put anything else on it. Follow schematic's instructions, fdisk-ing to delete/create new partition(s) then formatting the new partitions. You should then be able to load Win95/98 from CD. Most computer stores still sell Win98. Still, on a P66 it will be *slow*. A better choice might be linux. You can make it look like Windows and it's FREE. http://www.redhat.com/download/howto_download.html
Cheers,

Re: Need computer guru!!!

1)At the A:\> prompt, type fdisk and then delete and recreate your partitions. Once created, reboot with the disk and type format to format the partitions you created. See schematic's post above for the appropriate switches to add.
2)Did the boot disk load cd-rom drivers? If yes, put in your OS cd and run the installer. For Windows NT/2K/XP this will be D:\I386\winnt32.exe. It's a similar .exe for W95/98.
FYI - when installing WinNT, 2K or XP you'll get the chance during setup to delete, create and format partitions. With Win95 or 98 you don't so you must fdisk/format beforehand.
Good Luck,
