Im a new boat owner and I have a 2002 5.0 litre Mercury Mercruiser in my boat.I dont know if im chasing a problem or not but eng water temp runs around 170-175 degrees. It maybe innacurate on the gauge.I need to take a temp gun a see.I may change the impeller in the lower unit and possibly the thermostat as well just because i dont believed its been serviced prevously.I was look for possibly a link or directions to a updated version of a service procedure for the impeller replacement..

170-175 sounds right to me.
You have an Alpha I Gen II drive.
Section 3B of the Mercruiser service manual covers impeller replacement.
Here is a link to the online manual.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14cover.pdf

We have the same engine and outdrive. First-time owner last year. Temp was always 175, on the mark. Perfect temp. But I was not sure about the impeller cause the boat is 1999. So I removed the lower part of the drive and changed the impeller and gasket. No sweat to this point. But then - It was so difficult to put back the lower back to match the upper I ended up removing the upper part. For we with zero experience, tremendous job and delay. Needed 2 other men to help me put the entire outdrive back which was so heavy. You might encounter the same experience if you decide to change the impeller. Temp wise- it's perfect at 175.

I read some people can just remove the lower part of the drive to put a new impeller and they had no problem aligning or reinstalling the lower with the upper. I couldn't do it so someone on this forum advised me to remove the upper and then install the 2 parts on the floor. He was right.

When you remove the upper of the drive, you are now changing upper's seals and gaskets and different things you need to watch out for. In any case, you need the correct manual to do this.

Since you don't know when it was last serviced, good time to change the impeller.

the alignment is between the drive and the motor it requires removeing the drive and checking it with a alignment tool

its recomended to do it once a year a bad alignment will damage the coupling on the flywheel that turns the drive

when the upper and lower drive are separated to change the pump you should also pressure test it for leaks after you put it back together

http://mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm

this will give you idea what some of the jobs involve

tommays
