My 1998 175 sport jet has a bad ECM. I keep getting the oil warning horn athought the system seems to check out properly. The oil tank float work correctly, oil pump is working and oild use is normal. Just a dang horn every 2 minutes.

I think I have a bad circuit in my ECM...an expensive part. EDIT
Thanks.

You mean the TKS module??

Yes,

the ECM-turn key start module, part number 8539953 or 89395503T.
My dealer calls it the Electronic Control Module, seen it listed in Mercury parts as Electronic Control Unit, and in postings as the turn key start computer.

I'm not sure what to call it but mine don't work!:)

EDIT Thanks!

Thanks,

I did see the ebay listing...I have been searching online for a few weeks now.

I doubt a marine hardware store selling on Ebay will give me a discount since it is already than a brick and mortar store but I guess it is worth a try.

I did see a used one sell in June on Ebay for $50, and I just missed out on one that sold on another forum for $180. I just haven't got the budget for a new one right now and it kills me to pay $500 for some little part when my boat is worth maybe $4000.:(

I think I'll just wait a while and keep searching...I guess I have till spring.

Did you carefully check the wiring to the motion sensor? The TKS ECM continually monitors the operation of the motion sensor to assure that the oil pump is working. If there's a short or a bad motion sensor, then you would get the warning buzzer. Also the magnetic float sensor in the oil reservoir will cause the horn to sound as well. I'd make sure that I was positive that the problem wasn't in one of those before shelling out $500 for a new/used one. The problem could be internal to the ECM, but it might be worth checking. Good luck!

From the manual:

(TKS ECM)
The Turn Key Start Electronic Control Module (TKS
ECM) provides four major functions:
? Electrically controls the enrichment valve to provide
a rich fuel charge for starting a cold engine.
? Provides spark advance of 5 to start a cold engine.
IMPORTANT: Below 3,000 RPM the TKS ECM advances
idle timing 5 until the engine reaches
104F (40C). Above 3,000 RPM, the TKS ECM
does not affect ignition timing regardless of engine
temperature.
? Monitors and provides warning horn sounds for:
a. System Start Up Test
b. Low Oil in Engine Mounted Oil Tank (Magnetic float switch)
c. Oil Pump Drive Failure (Motion sensor on drive gear)
d. Over heat condition (cylinder head temperature)
? Provides engine over-rev protection by progressively
cutting off spark to ignition coils.
NOTE: There is no troubleshooting for the TKS ECM.
The engine will run without the TKS ECM. If the TKS
ECM is suspect, disconnect and run the engine to
systematically troubleshoot.

I hope you realise that this thread is several months old and that the OP has not been back since 9/2010. Waste of time dragging up DEAD thread??

I still come back to check every once in a while. Been running premix till I can find a cheap ECM.

anyone know how to disconnect just the oil warning portion of this system? I am going to run premix and want to retain all features except the oil warning. Thanks

Basil, you have hijacked an old thread. Very bad manners. Please start your own thread.

Thanks for your cooperation. :)
