I hope I'm posting in the right forum. Newbee poster, long time reader. After much reading I need to replace the main drive bearing in my VP AQ131A/275 drive, requiring the engine to be pulled from my '86 16' Bayliner Capri BR. I have just enough confidence to be crazy and attempt myself. My questions are:
1) Has anyone done this combo before?
2) I have zero forward room (see photo) do I need to remove bulkhead before I try lifting?
3) Should I attempt to remove the bell housing prior?
4) Am I posting in the right forum?
Here are some pics to see how tight it is...Bayliner didn't even make room to service the sea water pump, hence the notch out.

Re: Need engine removal advice

I pulled my engine yesterday, I have the same drive (275) but I have AQ225E in a 86 Bayliner 19ft Capri. I lifted a few inches to clear, then worked the engine loose from the drive and it slid right forward. Once you have all of the bolts out of the drive clamping ring, I soaked everything down well with a good penetrating oil for a day. It did take a little work to break the engine loose from the drive and those big rubber sealing rings.

I'll be putting the new bearings in the housing tonight, there is one small snap ring giving me fits right now. I have the larger snap rings out, this smaller one is deep inside on the transom side of the housing. I was getting to the point I was starting to throw things, so I stepped away for 24hrs....LOL

Also, this thread should probably be moved to the Volvo Penta Sterndrive Forum, you'll get a good response there....

Thanks Bob...To get that inner bugger off, I found a pair of real long pullers at NAPA. They're "Double-X" part number P952. At $36 it was a lot for one ring, but I didn't have to double up on my blood pressure meds either! Worked like a charm! Good luck and I'll post on the forum you recommend.
