Stumbled across iBoats, and that made me want to fix up/learn about/get working at all, our old 5.5h.p. Evinrude Fisherman.

I have no idea what year it is, so that seemed like a good place to start. The serial is 5520-11971. I though the ending numbers might indicate that it was a 1971 model...but maybe not.

I can post pix if necessary.

Basically I want to get this motor runnin tip top again...mainly so that I can work on a motor an learn a thing or two, and also because I have some time on my hands and this seemed like a cool project.

What I can remember from the last time we used it:

-Doesn't like to go from slow to fast speeds...there's some hesitation
-Seems to love to spit gas into the lake
-Don't really know any factory specs on it...just the stuff that my dad remembers...it would be cool to know exactly how much oil to add to the gas, and all that jazz..

I'm looking to tune/rebuild the motor and learn about all that entails.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt

That's a 1960 evinrude 5.5 2 Cylinder you got there. The fuel mix would be 24:1 or about 5.2 Ounces TCW-3 outboard oil per 1 Gallon of gas. A carb rebuild is probably in order as well as new spark plugs.

Pics and Info

Parts

More Parts

Ditto, Rick.

And also put a new water pump impeller in it.

Get yourself a manual. It will walk you through anything you need to do.

If the manual is not quite clear enough, we are here. :)

Re: Need evinrude advice on 5.5hp Fisherman

Thanks for the quick replies guys...

I just got back from the library and they had the Clymer Evinrude/Johnson 1.5-125 HP 1956-1972 shop manual.

So now that I've got the manual...can you guys give me a heads up on what I should think about replacing? I'll take it from there, now that I've got the shop book, but I just don't know what my priorites should be. The manual seems to be pretty indepth, so I just need a place to start.

Thanks,
m.
