This is my first time doing this so I need explicit instructions on how to recarpet my bunk boards. What type staples do I need and will a staple gun work or do I need some type of nail?
Is there something I need to do to the boards before hand, any prep work? How about folding the ends?
What is the best carpet to use and where should I get it? I'm only interested in black so that should make it easier. I am planning to use 2x6 in pressure treated wood, is this what I should be using? Thanks for the help and info.

Re: Need expalanation on carpeting new bunk boards

I went to lowes and got 2ea 2x6x8 PT boards for around 7 bucks each. 2ft by 12 ft of dark grey outdoor carpet for .52 cents a SQFT so about 12 bucks for the carpet. Then I got a tube of liquid nails and box of stainless staples for my staple gun.

If your existing bunks are in good shape, use them to mark your mounting holes on the new bunks.

Drill you new holes and place your bolts in them, then cover the top of the bunk with a good amount of liquid nails. Then lay it down on the back side of your carpet. Cut with enough overlap to give you about a 1 in flap on the bottom of the bunk...staple, stretch, staple, stretch...

Simple process, when you mount the new bunk make sure you tighting down the molts enough the countersink the head in the wood so its not a high spot for the hull to sit on.

I've done a few: When I do it again I'll coat with resin! I used ss staples, and adhesive - it held up well. The carpet retains water for awhile, and keeps the wood moist

What do think I should do, use lag screws or carriage bolts/nuts to hold on the bunks? The manufacturer used carbon steel lag screws but I was wondering if it wouldn't be better to use SS carriage bolts. The only problem is this way I would have to install the wood then put the carpet on as opposed to installing the carpeted bunk on the trailer. My boat will be on the trailer just jacked up enough to install bunk boards. Thanks

my bunk use and I replaced with ss lag screws just the right length screwed in through the bottom side. Triple measure to make sure they are not to long. If you mount them from the top side they will rub through the carpet.

stainless staples for freshwater. monel staples for salt water. standard staple gun. galvanized roofing nails in the ends where you have 3 or more layers of carpeting coming together.

To fasten the bunks to my trailer, I used stainless steel carriage bolts and nuts. The carriage bolts need to be countersunk into the bunk boards before carpeting so that the head does not protrude above the surface of the bunk. So that you can carpet the bunks before fastening them to the trailer, obtain some square neck washers with tynes that dig into the wood. The neck of the carriage bolt fits down into the square neck of the washer and the washer keeps the carriage bolt from turning as the nut is being tightened. Those square neck washers are a ***** to find. I just spent 20 minutes of my life trying to find them online for you, but couldn't. Here is the part number of the ones I bought a few years ago: 97449A102. I googled that number and the search came up empty. Good luck.

I would recommend not lag screwing up from the bottom. You want large round smooth stuff on top and small squared off or pointy ends below.

I would not cover the bottom of your bunks with carpet. Leave it open so the bunks will dry out better.
