Ok, so I am a bit of a novice when it comes to outboard engines and thier operation but I need to know what I'm doing wrong.

I have a 6.5 gallon tank with a the fuel line running to the engine. I primed the bulb several times until it felt full. The engine fired up and ran great for a few minutes. When I throttled up, I noticed the bulb started to deflate and compress followed by the engine cutting off. I would unplug the line, then redo the process. The engine would run again and then the same thing would happen.

I just got the motor and it had been completely checked from the marina when I bought it.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

It sounds like one of two things. Your tank needs to be vented as eventually there is too much vacuum created for the fuel pump to overcome. It could also be a weak fuel pump. Try it again with the gas fill cap removed and see if it will keep running. Also , try to pump the bulb just as it is dying but with the bulb collapsing I'm thinking the vent is the fix. Rick.

Aw man, I feel like an idiot. Ok, I see there is a screw in the gas cap that obviously acts as a vent. I never had it open. I'm thinking that was the problem. Again, a novice at all of this. Thanks for the help Rick!

Don't worry about it. We are all novices some a little more than others. What year's your engine? Each time you disconnected the line it gave the tanks some air, enough to re-start. I've got an 1982 and it runs like a top. Rick.

It's a 1985. It runs awesome. I was able to get some good speed up on the water before I started having issues.
