just bought a '75 6hp, traded my '73 4hp and 150bucks for it, tested it in tank at the sellers house before buying, everything worked great , it sounded great and i was very excited to get it home. took it out to my local creek the next day started it up warmed it up everything seemed fine, i had my friend and i plus 4 rods, a cooler, battery, troll motr, anchor, tackle bags, pfds , dry box, 3gal fuel tank ect, loaded into a 12ft hd johnboat, i was all ready to go until i put it in gear, at full throt it went @ as fast as my 4 hp! i took it home and began doing some tests, spark test, compression tst ect. found no spark in lower cyl (#2), i know i need to take the flywheel off to inspect the ignition sys, but , i can not figure out how to lock the flywheel so i can loosen the nut, any ideas????? also is the fly wheel nut standard or reverse thread

The flywheel nut has a regular thread.
I have a big leather belt that I wrap around the flywheel to hold onto it, and I use a 24 inch breaker bar on the nut. You really need a proper torque wrench to put the nut back on to the proper spec, as bad things can happen if the flywheel is over or under torqued.
A three bolt puller is also needed to get the flywheel off. A harmonic balancer puller from the auto parts store works fine.
The 6 hp may have a metal access plate on the top of the flywheel, so at least you can inspect the points and coils without taking it apart. If the coils have any cracks in them they need to be replaced.
Good Luck!

The parts diagram at shop.evinrude.com indicates that there is no port in the flywheel, so you will have to pull it. If you use an automotive type harmonic puller, make sure it includes grade 8 bolts of the correct size, thread count and thread length. If you have a pnuematic impact gun, you can remove the flywheel nut with it, without the need for a strap wrench. When reinstalling the flywheel, however, use the strap wrench to hold the flywheel while you torque the nut to the proper value.
