I need help. I posted a while back about my motor not staying in gear. got news today from my guy that something is broke in lower unit. he spent 5days adjusting the linkage and stuff and tested it infront of me and it was slipping in forward and reverse. does anyone know where i can find a lower unit for a good price?

Not sure what state you are in but I like to check craigslist a lot. You may not find a l/u by itself, but you may find a non working 80's model 125 that will work with yours on the back of a project boat or something. The l/u is easy enough to pull off and swap out if you can find one.

Profile? Location? You might be close to someone who can help.
When shopping make sure you get the one with the right shaft length!!!
They come in 20 and 25 inches.
And yes people buy and end up trying to install it and can't figure out why the lower only goes so far and stops!!!
Or it just (slides right in and now it won't turn the prop).Actual quote!!

Your "guy" spent five days trying to find the problem and then all he could say is something's broken? Find a new "guy" before you look for a new lower unit.

Popping out of gear when under load is a sign that the drive dogs are worn. Usually it only happens in forward gear but if the lower is incorrectly adjusted, it can happen in both gears. The fix is to re-grind the drive dogs on both the clutch and gears flush again. A machine shop can do this for you at about the price of a used lower that you know nothing about and may be crap.

If the lower unit simply will not go into either gear, then usually, the brass "yoke" has fallen off the shift shaft or has broken. Ten bucks or so for a new one.
