Hello all and thank-you in advance for your help...

I am having trouble with my 1978 Mercury Outboard. It is a 7.5 H.P. I took off the carbueretor and took it apart and cleaned it right out. I changed the gas, put brand new gas in it and finally after what seemed like forever...it started. The motor had to run with the choke pulled out half way.

Here is the problem. I turned off the motor for about two hours, and when I tried to start it again I could not get it going. I am using the original 1978 gas tank, you know, the one that is completely made of steel. I could only get the motor started in a pail of water and I had to have it in gear. The motor only ran for a couple of seconds and then quit. I could not get it started in the neutral position. I was wondering if the old gas tank could have impurities getting into the fuel and then corrupting the gas flow. Please help me as I thought it was running perfect and had planned to use it tomorrow but now I can not get it to run at all. Once again Tank-you in advance for your help.

Get A 6 gallon tank at walmart and fuel hose.
Give it A try. You may have to clean carbs again!
Also you may want to add A inline filter.

I hope you are not speaking of the glass type....
I hear that the cannister filter /water seperators do more and work better at filtering trash and help with any water that can accumulate in a tank.

Another person had figured that I was running on one cylinder, could that be true, and if it is, how do I check for this? I did check the spark on both plugs and both were equally strong. If I put the motor into gear and increase throttle, then sometimes I get the motor to start, but unfortuenately it won't stay running.

I have been told that the motor requires a new stator, of course a part they no longer make anymore. I guess I will have to replace the coils on it and see how that works then....I will keep you all up to date then.

If it ran ok for a short while, chances are it's probobly a fuel problem...not electrical. If
you want to check to see if it's running on one cylinder, pull a plug wire off while it's running and see if it changes.
