Went out on the water this morning and noticed idle seemed to be a bit higher than usual. Anyway, put into gear and got going with no problem other than the high idle. Start slowing down to come into the marina and lost all drive to the prop. Open up the engine bay to see of the drive shaft is still spinning, which it is but still no drive to the prop. Noticed the I feel no engagement when put into gear but engine does rev. Almost like the throttle only switch is stuck in but I can feel it go in and out. Shift cable is moving when the throttle is pushed forward and back but not much. PLEASE HELP AS I HAVE TO GET BACK TO THE BOAT DOCK ASAP!

No strange noises (grinding, squealing, etc) like something is broken. Also, if the coupler was broken would the shaft in the engine bay still be spinning?

guess you still on the water, check your messages. The gears in the upper unit can melt silently without oil and make no noise doing it.
The lower drive shaft could also be snapped and still make no noise

Yes it would be spinning. If the coupler failed, it doesn't completely go, you can in usually still idle in gear.

The shifting id done in the lower half of the drive. Appears you either broke the shift cable, down inside it, or something broke inside the drive. Going to have to pull the drive to find out

No thankfully someone pulled us back to our dock. However, my trailer is about 5 miles away.

Ok, now that I calmed down and got control of myself! I went out and disconnected the shift cable where is attaches to the lever on top of the valve cover. Now when I manually pull so push the cable the prop goes into gear but only spins at idle speed. What does this mean? At least i can now get it back on the trailer!

Engine speeds up. If I engage the lower unit by manually shifting the cable by hand the prop does engage but does not speed up when throttle is increased. Before when shifting into gear at the control lever there was a klunk heard and felt. However, now when I engage it by hand, now there is no klunk felt or heard. It's almost like the throttle only button is stuck in, AGAIN! However, it has a new shifter assem

Ok, so I just went out to the boat, grabbed the prop (with it in gear) and noticed the prop just spins and the output shaft doesn't. It seems the lock ring backed off and allowed the nut to back off which then meant the prop was not spinning with the engine speed. Can I just lock that inner nut back down and and secure the lock ring?

not if the plastic flo-torq hub is broken. remove the prop and inspect all the components. The splined brass sleeve is almost 3 inches long so the nit would have to be missing

What kind of socket is used to tighten the "prop nut" and where can I get one? I guess it's called the "tab washer receiver". It's got 9 slots in it, kinda like a 4wd front axle locking nut.

No Title

Here's what the nut that backed off looks like.
