Ok i recently aquired a 1986 thompson with the mcm 170. i Am having problems getting it to stay running after started and it has a really bad ticking noise almost like it is knocking. Any idea's?
For the starting problem this is what i have came up with so far. Carb seems to be getting plenty of gas, and timing seems to be set correct. I also checking all plugs and points, the point were like new and replaced the plugs making sure all were getting fire.
On the noise i checked lifter rockers and rods all apear to be fine also didnt find anything foriegn in the oil such as metal shavings.
Any and all info is greatly appreciated, I could also use details on the enging such exactly what is the mcm 170. Thanks to every one in advance i greatly appreciate it.

The 170 is basically a 470 engine. Make a video of this sound you hear. If engine is needing rebuilt, sensless to mess with the fuel pump or carb.

A compression check is always a good idea when trying to diagnose problems with a 470.

That's one of the problems I can't get it to idle long enough to do any thing. I will get the compressions and post them on Friday.

Also while I am checking compression I would like to go ahead and reset timing. Is it the same as a Ford 4 cylinder except with the 8/4 degree btdc. Of the compression stroke.
