NEED HELP! Cruisers w/ 2 MerCruiser 228's & 1 Borg Warner tranny, need 2nd tranny

Hi everyone, PLEASE HELP. I have been all over this site looking for answers amoung other places. I came across a 1980 29' Cruisers Villa Vee. It was a project (still is ). It has a MerCruiser 228 and the Borg Warner tranny w/ ratio of 1.19:1 on the starboard side. And nada on the port side. I have another MerCruiser 228 to put in on the port but they both rotate the same way. I was told that they didn't need to CR and that all I needed to do when I get the tranny was reverse the prop so that the props would CR. I have read everything and spoke to soooo many people and I'm getting conflicting info. I have 2 questions: Can I have 2 non CR motors and just turn the prop around? Do I need to get a tranny with the same ratio as the one in the boat?

I hope I can use the motor I have. Thanks everyone.

you cannot just "turn the prop around" - it will only go on one way

you cannot just get a counter-rotated prop for a standard rotation setup either, it would go forward but it would be like using in reverse so very inefficient

you nned either a counter rotated engine and transmission set or a standard rotation engine with a transmission that can be counter rotated, im not sure if borg warners can be set to rotate either way or if you need to get internals specific for counter rotation/standard rotation

yes the gear ratio needs to be the same as the other one

So there is a reverse rotation trans that would attach to to a standard rotation motor? What is that called? And is there any way to change the rotation of the motor, just curious?

Ayuh,.... You can either drop in another tranny like the other 1, 'n run 'em both the same direction, usin' the props ya got...

Or, Some transmissions are reverseable, Donno much 'bout which 1s can, or can't...

Reversin' the motor has to start with the bare block at the beginnin' of the built...
The 1 you have would need to be completely torn down, 'n rebuilt from scratch..
With Alota parts you don't have, 'n that are hard to find...

Turn the prop around,..?? Nope, there's more to it than that...

Same Ratio,..?? Yes, no way 'round it...

yes, hurth transmissions are reversable, but they arent "straight", they actually drop down so the engine needs to be mounted higher - otherwise you need to go with a v-drive

i do not know that much about borg warner trannys, like bond-o says you could just run two standard rotation engines and trannys

as bond-o states, you need to completely strip the block down to counter-rotate the engine, merc no longer uses counter rotation engines in thier packages - most inboards these days are v-drive setups with counter rotated trannys

Ok, thanks guys. This has been a headache to figure out. Strippin' down the motor isn't a viable option, so I'll stick with getting a reverse tranny. I don't won't to run her with the props running the same direction, it would be a bear to operate, I like have CR props especially when backing in my slip.

Check The model number on your gear. What I think you have is a right had output gear. Plus your starboard engine must be a Right hand also. ( note RH=counter rotation. looking from the rear.

If I am right you will need to get a left hand output gear for the port side. That engine will be a standard turn= LH. not hard to find. you really need to test the extra engine for roation.

Most of the BW gears in the late 70's and early 80's could except any rotation engine ( you change the setting on the front)

How ever you can not change the output.
