I have a 1968 (model 7573) 75hp Chrysler that has what I guess is the 85hp head according to this linked post. The Sierra 18-3855 gasket I bought from from my local parts store does not have the water openings that my head has.

Where can I buy the correct gasket with water ports, or do I need to buy a used 2 part head that will fit the 18-3855 gasket that I have?

Thanks, new boat owner of 2 boats:
1968 Glastron V-156 & 1968 Chrysler 75
1960's 14' Smoker Craft & Evinrude 18 fastwin

I am rebuilding both boats and engines over my summer vacation.

Thanks for your help, I will have other posts with other questions.

I would suggest you to make a phonecall to Franz at Franz Marine.
He will give you adivse what to do.

I gave him a call - he just said use the head gasket even though it covers up the water jacket holes. I'm a little concerned about head overheating - but he's got a lot of experience!

The only openings that I've ever seen on the Force outboard heads is one at the top for the water coming from the thermostat and one at the other end of the head for the water exiting the head. The gaskets that appear to have opening around the cylinders are usually the older style. These opening serve no purpose as far as water circulation since the head itself does not have any matching openings. The water circulates through the head via the two openings that I mentioned.

It won't let me upload photos. Error both in Chrome & IE. Here is a link to photos in google photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/HQaJ1LNJbC40a0Qr2

As you can see there are passageways both in the head and the cylinder. Franz said they do not make the old style gasket anymore and to just use the one I had.

The one I had had 2 tiny holes into 2 of the cavities - I added additional holes into each of the other cavities so I can get some water flow thru them (he said I didn't need to do that, but I did anyway - if I blow it up it was $260 for boat, motor & trailer, so no great loss).

I've got it all back together now, new head bolts set to 20 ft lbs & I just need to put the bottom end with new impeller back together, add oil and give it a test.
