I have a 1979 century boat with the 351 Windsor motor, and need help finding the part number for the upper gearcase housing. Purchased one online that looks the same on the outside but looks different internally. The one I purchased has a code on top “241 8” whereas the one I need to replace has the code “356 8”. I believe I have purchased one for the 5.7.

The outdrive’s model number is 982436.

Do you know the difference between high and low profile upper gear housings? All Ford 351 upper gear housings were low profile. All upper housings before 1972 were high profile. There were some V8 Chevys that were high profile all the way to 1977 before the 400-800 series where all the drives were low profile.
Your drive series should be the 800. The gear ratios between a Ford and a Chevy should be the same or close enough to work.
There is about 4” different in overall height of the 2 different upper gear housings.

Those numbers are not the correct ones. Those might be a production date code.
982226 is the # for an empty gear case. This will fit on your boat.
What is the gear tooth count of your original housing?
What is the gear tooth count of the housing you purchased?
