I own a 1988 OMC Cobra Stern Drive #985268. My reverse does not work and the marine mechanic that was helping me had me purchase a Sierra 18-2245-1 Shift cable assy. He then moved away. I figure, with the help of my 45 year old auto mechanic friend I would try to install the cable myself. First! Can I just remove the lower gear housing to replace the cable or do I need to remove the entire Stern Drive unit from the vessel. And if that is the case, do I need to purchase a GLM Part #90200 Hinge Pin Tool? I have already purchased a Secol On-line repair manual for my boat, but it does not seem to cover my 1988 drive unit. I can really use some help. Thanks in advance.

You should really get a factory manual. You can find them on Ebay.

You don't remove the lower unit but you do need to remove the drive to install the cable. Removing the drive is the easiest part of the job typically. You don't need a hinge pin tool.

Adjusting the cable is tricky. Failure to do it correctly could cause you to damage the dog clutch in the lower unit.

You should visit this site. A lot of info in it.
