The bushing isn't a bushing it's there to stop the rubber from falling all the way down.
It goes on, cup side up.
The rubber goes on with the lip up..
The rubber really doesn't matter as long as it's there.
It's a grease shield, keeping the grease in, on the splines.
Use lot's of grease.
Marine grease.

Go to: boatsdotnet Mercury parts section.
Top section and index Chrysler and open the corresponding year.

It always helps if you include the year, hp, model# and serial #

They made the 140 for 7 years.
And lots of changes between the years.

I dropped lower unit to chk impellor...the upper shaft seal fell out. Cannot tell from schematic which way to put it on - its a cylinder with "bulb" at one end.
I can post pic on Flikr or YT.

Thanks a BUNCH.
my missuse of words...figured it was a stop and lucky I deducted lip/bulb side should be up.
BTW. This old guy is having a BEAST of a time getting spline in (and shifter to some extent). Its HEAVY...I have rigged up supports. But no luck yet...
Ah I can add pics later...

Jerry your info and encouragement really helped. I made sure the prop was on gear and turn it and the spline popped and shifter too!!

This was a wild goose chase ( good experience) the impellor was fine.
I will check the water intakes for dirt and tell-tale.
I could not fit small muffs over the intake :) and in a bucket my neighbour could not see water...did not want to burn it up do I shut down.
Try it again tomorrow.

IF??? you had the impeller out and you don't know how old it is??
Then change it!!
The bucket needs to be DEEEEP.
It needs to cover the cavitation plate by 3-4in.
The pump won't pickup the water unless it's over the pump housing.

The muffs, I use duct tape on them to insure a good seal.
The lower needs to be dry and oil free.
LOTS of water pressure.
It has access to millions of gallons in the lake. But only a few on the hose.
So turn it up.

CHRYSLER 140 IGNITION :)

OK I must go back on the hwy for a month...
I will be reading here often.
z**
Had engine running last week 10 minutes.
No start last try.?
Had spark on one plug yesterday...now none.
No fuse, rather circuit breaker (continuity 0 with ohm test).
Key on yellow shows 0 -- it should --jump switch cranks her. (It will crank with key BTW I want to be beside to check spark with DIY tester).
***
Its all new but I have been reading archives TX!
***
When I get home I will try CD tests and coil tests.
***
This note is mainly to remember what I have done. dont want to waste your time.
I am DETERMINED to learn and GET BACK ON WATER ---its been too many years :)
***
Without you guys it would be Mission Impossible.
One BIG question for now...Anyone reading this have you switched to AUTO ignition?
(Difficult &/or expensive).

PS One year late. TY I did get the shaft in after your guidance on the seal. I tend to get lost in the matrix, but NO EXCUSES for not saying TY.
