jerry, my 115, previous owner removed thermostat! I removed the bypass cover spring was broken and the poppet well n truly jammed, I drilled a hole in the lower tray so I could drill the nylon poppet out, so I decided to flush her out using the garden hose through the thermostat opening, I turn the water on I got 10 foot stream out top of head through my pisser pipe fitting, a lil stream out the front mid section cover outlet but nothing from the poppet hole, should I have got water from it? I’m really trying to avoid dropping the head but if water should be com8ng out the poppet hole I’ll drop the front water jacket of first if it’s all clogged up with the salt crystals I’ll take the head off and clean it right out, right do you advise please n thank you , you are the resident master

Thanks for the vote of confidence:)
There are a few others that share that position,Jiggz would be one.

If the poppet valve is out you should be getting water from there.

The purpose of the valve was to relieve excess pressure.
They stopped putting them in in the late 80's
They just blocked the hole.
So yours isn't really needed.

BUT!! if your having an overheating problem and can't find the problem??
Then I'd consider removing the head and clean the system.
The parts can still be had if you want to replace.

Have you removed the head and checked the cooling passages?

Motors that didn't get flushed as they should frequently the passages get blocked with corrosion and sand/salt.

I haven’t dropped the head yet, maybe today I’ll let the water jacket of first and see what it’s like, if she’s crusty I’ll break head seal and pull it off, I’ve had others say you don’t need the poppet, others say you it will run too cold this is why I asked you next to Frank A your the most knowledgeable around, cheers and thanks I’ll let you know what I find

Yes just put it back together.
BUT!! if it's off and clean, replace it.
Just make sure the poppet doesn't stick in the hole.
