I sent my upper drive to a machinest to get the 4 Allen head bolts out to access the u joints. He got them out and has the drive apart. He told me the bearings are shot. I'm pretty sure it's the bearing under the top plate that the oil dip stick screws into. What would the bearing be called and what would the part number be? Any chance an industry standard bearing would work I can't access the volvo website from Canada so the more info I can get the better. It's tough getting parts up here. The drive is a 290.

We just finished pulling the motor for a repower and the upper drive is the last thing that needs to be fixed. Ice just melted on the lakes and I'm chomping at the bit to get her back in the water

Yes they are an industry standard Bering ?

I don't want to pull them unless they are and I know I can quickly track one down or else it's sometimes a 3 week wait for parts up here.

If a part number isn't available, a digital micrometer will do the trick, and you can cross that to NSK or SKF bearings.

The lip seals that I pulled from my SX drive rams were stamped w/ part number, but they could not be cross referenced,
even by the US company that represents the parent company in the States.

But mic'ing it out gave me exact numbers to reference to industry standard parts.

I don't know if the Europe Volvo Penta site is geolocked as well as the USA site. Below is a link to the page with the 290 drive.
The 2 bearings in the upper unit are P/N 853542 and on the input shaft they are 183247 & 3850852. A decent bearing supplier should be able to cross reference these number to standard commercial bearings. Google is your friend!

May I suggest you read the other post Re. the 290 that is just below yours.

Thanks for the help. We dug into the top end a little further and the bearings look better than first thought. Going to put it all back together and then do the bearings in the entire drive next off season.
