I need help from the experts here. I have a 1991 boat with an older. The cowl is marked: Evinrude, XP150, it has VRO,and V6. It has hydraulic tilt/trim. The model/serial number tag from the mounting bracket is missing and I can't find any other model numbers on it. The silver plug on the block has "0432163". A search on that returns an obsolete part. I contacted several online Evinrude suppliers with negative results. All say its not enough info to id the engine. I've exhausted my search skills in trying to id this engine. BRP was no help (at least haven't answered my online email request) I want to buy manuals and parts, but so far am stuck.

If anyone can ID this engine or point me in the right direction it will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need Help Identifying Motor

That engine has dual power packs, found on the 1984-1988 model year 150S (XP) models. Characterisitic through those years of production was the special 35 amp alternator with the vented flywheel. A desirable engine. Not much difference in parts through all these years. A major identifier is the EVINRUDE applique plate on the side of the engine. That same applique was used in the 86/87/88 years when they went to the dark blue paint schemes. It was positioned in the same location through all those years. In the 88 model year, that EVINRUDE applique was painted silver, as was the top of the cowling. Normally, that would make the engine a 86 or 87. That cowl may have been repainted and rebadged, so it's hard to tell. You can do your own parts comparison by delving into the factory exploded parts lists at: epc.brp.com. Since the ignition systems are pretty much all the same, a service manual from eight 86 or 87 should be nearly identical. If you wanted to pull the high speed jets out of the carbs, you can compare them with the factory parts lists. The factory did change the jet sizes between years. Those jet size variances may tie it down to a specific year.

Re: Need Help Identifying Motor

makes you think why they removed the model no , because thats the easiest way to chatch some one , & just change the cowling cover with a more hp no on it & i can con you very easy , & say its such & such hp , the no you have is the cranksharft & piston assembly , & is listed to only fit from 1986 to 1991 from 88 hp 85 90 100 110 115 hp & 150 hp comes no where in the picture ,it apears to be from 1984 as the fly wheel came from that year & they changed the coils from 1982 so i dont no if youve been conned , cheers.

Re: Need Help Identifying Motor

The 35 amp charging system on the 150 first came out in '84. 1988 was the last they used it on the XP style 150's.

If your engine has the take-apart style fuel filter ( 90? nipple ) it is an '84 to '87. In '88 they went to an inline straight through plastic filter that lay in the motor pan. Of course that could have been changed out over the years.

If that is a quick-disconnect fuel fitting on the port side of the motor, that makes it an earlier model and it is best to remove it as it adds fuel restriction to that thirsty engine. later models had just a nipple for 3/8" fuel lines.

Hope this helped narrowing down what motor you have. My guess is an '84 or 85 based on the fuel fitting.

The 84/85 Evinrudes were factory painted a light silver-blue color.

Thanks for the terrific breakdown of info and explanation. I'll start checking the exploded parts list and see if I can narrow it down further. Again, thanks

Thanks, I'll check the fuel filter. The fitting is a nipple for 3/8s fuel line. Not a quick disconnect.

I’ve got a similar question. The ID trade is missing from my transom bracket also. I’ve been told that the silver plug showed my serial number. Obviously that isn’t correct. I’ve found a couple other numbers on my engine but I’m unsure which one is possibly the serial number. What do you think?
