I have a 1980 fiberform 21' boat. The omc stern drive m/982436 s/w217770 I would like to replace the water pump and seals on outdrive. I'm having a hard time know what part numbers to get.

Welcome aboard:

I think you're probably lookin' at the part number for your upper gear case. I think your actual model number should start out 990....

Look for a tag on the engine, typically on one of the mounts. It'll give you the model number of the OMC. I believe you've got a full mechanical Stringer. We can narrow that down even further with the HP, but best if you can find that number on the engine.

Thank you for the response. The numbers I gave are on the stern drive. I will try to get numbers off the motor tonight

I'm no expert but I think you have a Hydro Mechanical shift. I have a 1981 stringer and I converted it to full mechanical. You have a 800 series stringer . When you look for parts all you need to know is it's a 800 stringer, you can find water pumps and seal kit with no problem. I have dealt with Tungsten Marine, Good people,
They can help you . I have worked on my drive a few times, Water pumps and replaced the upper gear box. I have a 305 too, OMC.
Be careful when pulling your drive off, watch the shift cable .Take your time when pulling it out of the intermediate housing so you don't tear the rubber.
Make sure you pull the NEG off the battery post first before unhooking the shift cables from the box. When the cables are loose and hanging there it might touch something electrical and short, burning the cable in two. That is an expensive mistake. on the shift box in back if it doesn't have micro switches on it,it's hydro mech.

Number still isn't makin' sense: If you were a 1980 (hydro-mechanical shift, I think) your number would be something like 990256C"-ish." If it's a 1981 (full mechanical, I think) then it's going to be something like 260FTHRCIF"-ish."

Both are 260 HP with an OMC 800 drive. I think it's the same impeller kit, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

One way to tell if its full mech, There will be a anode above the adjustable steering tab on the lower unit. Hydro-Mech didn't have them.
I have a 1981 800 stringer on my Skiff Craft and it had a H/M. I converted it to F/M
