Make sure there's fluid in there too. Lot's of older trim/tilt systems require rebuilding due to wear and tear and improper maintenance, storage, etc. You may not see any fluid because a lot of it has already leaked out, but it shouldn't be too slow when tilting up. It should go up relatively quick and smooth.
When you answered the question with, "That's the plywood on the back", are you saying that's a plywood repair on your transom, and what's it covering? The question about your transom is because if it's bad, you could find your new-to-you motor on the bottom of the lake (along with the rest of the boat) if the transom were to go. Not to mention the safety of the passengers and crew.
As for the motor itself, you'll grow to love it and don't ever let a Merc guy tell you any different
