NADA is not a source that you use to properly identify a motor, heck I don't even know if I would use their values either.

It is indeed a 1987 70HP and it is supposed to be a 3 cylinder NOT a 2 cylinder as NADA suggests.

Well, if the boat turns out to be junk, at least you got a decent deal on the motor. :D

Nice motor you have there. The 70hps are one of the better 3's built, I think. The design came out in 1968 with the 55hp and mechanically, they were fine, but electronically, they were every repair shop's nightmare. If you got a 65hp from 1970, on, you were okay, but stay away from the earlier ones.

Re: Need help identifying this motor.

Thats actually the plywood back there, its old and rotten, just not wanting to replace it just yet. I had to repair the hull of the boat still leaks a bit but will hold me over till I find a Nice boat with no motor or trailer. I have yet to run a full tank through the motor she fires right up but I think the carbs need a cleaning.

Also I have a question on my Power trim and tilt. when I trim up it starts slowwwww like the motor isnt at full power, and also if I have it trimmed up and give it gas it pushes down the rams. There is no leaks of fluid any where. Any Ideas?

Sounds like you may have air in the system.

Re: Need help identifying this motor.

Make sure there's fluid in there too. Lot's of older trim/tilt systems require rebuilding due to wear and tear and improper maintenance, storage, etc. You may not see any fluid because a lot of it has already leaked out, but it shouldn't be too slow when tilting up. It should go up relatively quick and smooth.

When you answered the question with, "That's the plywood on the back", are you saying that's a plywood repair on your transom, and what's it covering? The question about your transom is because if it's bad, you could find your new-to-you motor on the bottom of the lake (along with the rest of the boat) if the transom were to go. Not to mention the safety of the passengers and crew.

As for the motor itself, you'll grow to love it and don't ever let a Merc guy tell you any different:D

Good for you, nothing like catching 'em out of your own boat is there? Test the flex on the transom to make sure it doesn't move up, down, in or out. If you decide to re-do it, there's tons of threads on here that will walk you through the whole process. It's definitely not something to put off if there's issues.

The sticky at the top of this particular forum (Evinrude/Johnson) has a lot of helpful links inside it. It's from "tashasdaddy" (RIP), but you have to open it to find the specific links. They are labeled so it's really easy to find what you're looking for usually. Tons of great advice on most Johnnyrude issues that can come up.
