I just bought a 16' fishing boat with a 1983 70 hp Johnson that currently has a prop lower end unit. A jet drive unit came with the purchase as well and according to the previous owner he had it remove and replaced with the prop for personal perference. Since I do more fishing on the river, I need to swap the lower end. Is this something that I can do myself, or should it be done professionally. Local shop here wants 250 dollars for the job. I have a decent auto mechanic background. If someone has completed this job, can you please give me a quick step to step on how to swap out the units. What obstacle can I run into and at what height I should raise the motor. Trying to save some cash during this tough economy. Thanks in advance.:)

It should be a matter of removing the current one and sliding the new one on, but not 100% sure on that. If you dant have a manual get one, it should explain how to remove the lower unit.
