I have read that I must remove the shifts rod bolt under the bottom Carb in order to drop lower unit. I have romoved the bottom Carb by still can't identify that bolt. Will someone please deceive its size and location to me? Also is the shift rod plastic or copper colored? If anyone knows where I can find a diagram it would be great my manual doesn't have it and I need this off by Friday so no time to order OEM manual from kencook.com

on my 87 it is more of a pin than a bolt, the pin removal lets a metal part slide to the starboard side and that releases the shift shaft. Make sure you get the bolt under the trim tab on the lower unit!

Pull the clip on the starboard side of the shift linkage and slide it to port. That should disconnect the upper shift link.

Have someone move the shifter while you watch what is going on just under where the bottom carb sat. You will see a shift rod about 3/8 inch in diameter sticking straight up. Remove the pin/bolt that makes that rod go up and down. then DO NOT bend it while you remove the lower unit. Then don't turn it or fool with it while you have the lower unit removed. Turning it screws up the adjustment.
