I'm in the reconstruction process on a '89 Bayliner Capri. I finally got the boat ready for carpet; got rid of a bunch of extra wires (speaker wires; extra non working lights; etc.) I have now started working on the motor; a '89 Force 85. I plan to rebuild the WP; check the thermostat; new plugs and carb kits. Right now I have two questions. I read a old thread about lubricating the remote cables with a plastic tube. It worked great! However after installing them; the neutral safety switch is not engaged. Anybody know an easy way to adjust? My other question is underneath the bottom carburetor there is a vacuum line that looks like it is coming out of the intake. Right now its got a screw in it. Where does this line go? This motor shows indications of being a training aid; so nothing will surprise me. Would appreciate any help.RF

IF the engine is shifting correctly into forward and reverse, then no adjustment is needed to the shift linkage. To depress the neutral interlock switch, ( obviously with the engine in neutral) you loosen the two screws on the side of the shift arm and slide the cam to the correct position. Tighten the screws.

If the engine is not shifting correctly, before adjusting the cam, adjust the linkage. Below the bottom carb id the top of the shift rod held by two nuts. It is a miserable job to adjust and goes slowly. However moving the nuts UP will in effect lower the rod and bias more toward forward.

The hose on the bottom is actually an oil recirculation hose. It takes spit-back from the carbs that collects on the bottom of the airbox and recycles it to the bottom of the manifold. Since the fitting at the manifold is a metered orifice designed to work whether or not oil and fuel is present, you have the option of not using it.

You have the carb cover?
The hose goes on the bottom.

Thanks for the quick reply; will check it out and let you know .I was judging the switch was not right because it would not crank after I installed them again. The cables were disconnected up front; not at the engine; they were not touched. I will get to it after I rebuild the WP. And yes I do have the cover; it was not on when I I bought it. (Another indication of a training aid.) But I did notice that it looked like somebody had spilt oil inside. A good shot of foamy engine degreaser cleaned it up fine. Thanks for the help; don't run off; might have WP questions too.RF
