Need Help on controls please

Hello
i have just baught a 1974 cavarelle 18' open bow with a 165hp i/o mercruiser
and i have even got ahold of a selco mercruiser boat book to help me with a few things but i have looked and read eventhing about the controls and none of them in the book match for this boat the controls i have at the base is round about 3 1/2 to 4" round with a black button in the middle i push forward and the idle goes up and then when i pull the shifter out from the hual it will engage the drive but it seams like there is alot of play. when i have some one turn the prop as i push the controls forward it will engage at about a 45% is there a way to adjust this and or is there a diffrent control i can use??? in the selco i looked at the adjustment part for the controls by the transom plate but nothing looks like what i have on the boat.. please help... and also if some one could i try to reset my password but when i get it sent to my email i never get anything can i get some kind of an email lonly knight 15 yahoo.. please and thank you...

Some time ago, someone posted a scanned copy of a 71 Mercruiser 6 cyl owners manual. He closed his account, but I saved it and just uploaded it. it's 25 MB in size, but it sure answers your questions.

just downloaded it and went to open it but says file is damaged and could not be repaired.

Must be something on your end, I just downloaded it and it worked fine for me.

Just put a Uflex B49 on my 165,cables go straght in very good to use
