Hi I got a 79 merc 850 with a mercontrol. The cables needed to be changed and some wires needed robbed taped cause of it being old. Everythings is fixed and in place but couldn't get the motor to stay in nutral and the revese doesn't go back all the way like it used too. Does anyone here have the diagram or could tell me how to put it back right. Thank yo for any help!

Sounds like somethings out of adjustment. Do you have a manual? There should be a section explaining how to set your shift block alignment. Then its just a matter of putting your lever in neutral and adjusting the barrel on the cable to the correct position.

Ml5, take the shift cable back off, manually shift the outboard into neutral. Now , with the shift-block and the control lever in neutral you should be able to see if the barrel on the cable needs to be turned in or out to compensate for any offset when trying to put the cable back on. Sounds like you have it to far forward. Hope thats not too confusing.

There two cables on the 79 merc 850 and I did put the lower one in nuetral and the prop spin freely. But for the upper one do I have to pull the part on the engine all the way back (toward the boat) to put the cable in place? Or let it stay in place and adjust the cable?

There are two cables as you described. One cable is the shift cable, forward, neutral and reverse. The other is the throttle cable.

The shift cable is the lower cable where it connects to the motor. The throttle cable connects to the throttle linkage on the motor, above the shift linkage.

When you change gears, the shift cable will move first. As you move the throttle lever further, the shift cable stops moving and the throttle cable then starts to move.

In order to properly hook up the throttle cable to the motor you need to perform a link and sync procedure. There is a very good description of how to do that here
