Need help on thermostat seal installation

Hello all,
I am having trouble getting the thermostat seals installed in the cylinder head of a 1995 Johnson V6 60 degree looper. I have seals from Johnson and I cannot seem to get them to fit the opening in the cylinder head. I have them oriented with marked side facing cylinder head. They will not slip into the opening. Any tricks or tools needed to get these guys into the head? This is on a J150GLEOM
with O rings around cylinder bores.

The original seal left it's seat in the opening when I removed the old seal. I thought it was part of the cylinder head and I was trying to install the old seal over it. I was tipped off to the answer by another boating forum. The fellow had the exact same problem I did. Removed old seat and the new seal went right into place.

Did you have to take the cylinder head off to install? or were you able to extract the old seal and install the new one by just removing the thermostat cover?

The head has to come off to install. With head off take a screwdriver and pry old seal and seat from head. New one will go right into place.
