My outdrive cracked at the bottom and is leaking fluid so I will need to replace the lower

Having a hard time figuring what lower I can use

My boat is a 99 glastron with a 5.7

The drive I have now is a 1.55 sx-m so what lower units will work for me. Does it have to be a m? Can I use a 1.60 lower?

Do you happen to know your Volvo drive serial number? http://www.volvopentastore.com/mall/template/store/volvopenta/help.html

Are you looking for new or used? Sometimes it seems like used Volvo drives can be just a bit harder to locate than some other manufacturers but not impossible depending on search and time frame you'd give it.

One way to search for new or even used would be to find the actual part number and search it online, eBay and a few other type places like EBay if possible....That or just search/describe what you're looking for on each site too. If you don't get some where there you might have a to call a few marine repair type shops to see if they have something you're looking for if it's "used" laying around in the back room, etc. Any Volvo dealer should be able order a new one too for you.

As for the gear sizes, I "believe" most of the gearing sizes are done in the upper unit so the lower unit might be the same as long as you stay within close range of your original. < If not, though the ones you mentioned are very close to each other, you may need to change the pitch of the prop a bit depending on where your top RPM is at right now vs where the new lower unit takes your new top RPM with the same prop.

How sure are you have a 1.55 gear Raito?

If the plate is worn then you may have possibly misread it due to looking up SX-M drives, I don't see 1.55 but 1.51 is listed among many other as noted in the following list. SX-M, SX-MTD, SX-MTD3, SX-M 1.43, SX-M 1.51, SX-M 1.60, SX-M 1.66, SX-M 1.79, SX-M 1.89, SX-M 1.97, SX-M 2.18, SX-MTD 1.66, SX-MTD 1.79, SX-MTD 2.18, SX-MTD3 1.66 - 7746020 ..SX-M1, SX-M1 1.43, SX-M1 1.51, SX-M1 1.60, SX-M1 1.66, SX-M1 1.79, SX-M1 1.89, SX-M1 1.97, SX-M1 2.18 - 7746030

It is a 1.51 sorry I typed wrong looking for used
No problem just trying to help....While looking things over I just noticed that the main gearing sizes are done in the lower unit while not much on the top...So you need to find the right one (Lower unit) for your engine size...More edit info to come here.

Notice gear item number 4 shows the gear sizes, http://www.volvopentastore.com/Prope...view_id.782036

Also notice item number 1 is the gear housing with different gear sizes, http://www.volvopentastore.com/Lowe...on_id.603991992--store_id.366--view_id.782033

^ Find your lower part number and start your search's as a starting point.

This is the gearing for the upper unit, notice in the notes there are no gear sizes, but just a list that says fits/For: SX-M 1.43, SX-M 1.51, SX-M 1.60, SX-M 1.66, SX-MTD 1.66, SX-MTD3 1.66

Do you think a 1.60 lower would bolt up fine I just wouldn't have all the power?
I did some editing up top^^.... Yes a 1.60 would "bolt" on just fine but there will/should be a good change in power/overall performance and if so you'd have to play with props so you don't hurt your engine by being out of RPM range... While there are mathematical equations to finding the right prop, it's mostly becomes trial and error of how the boat operates to avoid damage but you as the boat operator has to know if the boat is preforming within it limits/expectations.

Due you have a lead on a used 1.60 at a good price?

Check you private message for a possible lead. Red number up top by your name, right hand corner.

How bad is the leak? Maybe repairable? Or another option to consider is buying an empty lower housing and having your gears install at a reputable local Volvo service dealer.
