all of the sudden I hear a clang...never good. I stopped took off the cover of my 1983 Mercury 40hp and looked around. I didn't notice anything. Turned the key and it threw a piece of a magnet at me! I found two other pieces to make a total of 3 and still missing some. Does anyone have any idea what happened and how I can fix it. My prop has a little chip in it but it has been also reworked recently. Could it be from vibration.

This is more of bump up than info about your problem. Some motors have magnets afixed to the inside of the flywheel. Was any of the work recently done in this area? If so take it back to the mechanic that did the work.

Anybody with some knowledge on this???

Sounds like some of the magnets came loose from their lamination to the flywheel.Possibly due to a previous overheat condition of the engine. It is likely that there will be damage to the stator windings as well.Naturally the flywheel will need to be removed to assess.

Should I still be able to start the engine?

No.
This one has to be fixed. The magnets are part of the balance of the flywheel and it will not be happy without a few of them.
Good Luck.
