I have a 1996 Mercury 40hp 4 cylinder. Put it on water yesterday started great put in gear started to go engine boggs down gauges go dead. Pulled the hood off engine main fuse was blown replaced it gauges returned to normal started right up put in gear still fine went to go and it boggs down and blows fuse on motor again. Runs fine at idle had to idle all the way back to ramp. Had it out last weekend and had no issues at all. Anyone know what the problem may be or can tell me where to start looking? any help is greatly apprieciated.

Something is apparently shorting in the control box when you move the lever. You might check the wiring at the engine as well. Something in the throttle/shift linkage may be snagging the wiring which is popping the fuse.

Re: Need help please

Looked at the boat today found that a linkage on the side of the motor had popped loose on the throttle and found the wire harness running from the tilt motor into the engine had several spots with bare wire showing other than that did not find anything else. Could not get the button out of the center of the throttle control to look at the wire in the handle.

Re: Need help please

Took boat out no blown fuses now but motor is bogging down still i wiggled the key on dash mounted switch and it picked up for a couple seconds. Tach was jumping around eractically also when i would tap on it it would really jump around. Idles fine starts fine just boggs down when attempting to accelerate under load. Throttle only position works fine. Messing with the key helped so not sure where to start looking. Choke/primer solenoid? bad ignition switch? Tach? anyone got any ideas.

Here is where im at- Removed fuel tank, added water seperator with new red tank, replaced all fuel lines from tank to block including bulb, removed carbs cleaned, rebuilt fuel pump. Took to river yesterday, performance improved greatly but sometimes will act up similar to a miss seems slugish and makes odd sound from motor like metal rattling or gears not meshing right??? :confused:and only get about 5000 rpm wide open then all the sudden it staightens out and runs great for awile before acting up again. Ran very rough at 2500rpm (not sure if tach is correct however)Tryed to "pattern" the problem for 2 hours but no luck with that. :mad:Throttle only position has no issues. Tach still acts up sometimes. Anyone have any suggestions???? could really use some help :(not too many repair shops here and heard very bad things about them.

Re: Need help please

double check all wiring and connections would be my first guess without actually laying eyes on it! If possible run the motor without the boat wiring connected to it and see if the problem goes away. Make sure safety switch isn't shorting in and out with vibration, can't think of anything else right now.
