I am new to boat motors but not new to mechanics. I have rebuilt an old chevy engine but an outboard is alot different. I recently burned up a 70 hp merc 1980 model. I need to know how much a rebuild kit is. I know that it is going to be a huge task but I have nothing but time b/c i have a boat that I am pay ing a note on that doesnt run. I cant afford the 1500 that i was told it was going to cost for the mechanic to rebuild it. If i dont rebuild it myself it will just sit up and rust. I definately dont want to do that. I was wondering if i started rebuilding if iboats could walk me throught it.

Like you, I know quite a bit about auto mechanics, but I am also learning as I go with boat motors. The first thing you need is a manual. There's no getting around that. One thing that I have learned so far is that there's just enough difference between car motors and boat motors that I get frustrated when I first try to work on something. The hands on experience, along with a manual, really helps a lot. I have also noticed that some aspects are more simple than a car motor. <br /> As far as the rebuild kit, maxrules.com lists one for $530. Hope this helps!<br /><br /><br />"I have not failed. there really is no "kit" as you dont know what ya need till its opened up.<br /> the basics are bottom bearing, pistons and rings. I always replace the wristpin and rod needles as well as the rodbolts/nuts if the service manual calls for it. water pump and t-stats as well as fuel pump rebuild/replace and carb kits.<br />if you dont find and correct the cause the rebuilt will fail shortly.<br /> dissasembly, careful cleaning and inspection and you will know what you need.<br /> its not difficult but much attention to detail is required. its a high performance machine that can and will run at 5000 RPM longer than your bladder will go,but only if all the subsystems are working correctly. let one degrade and Poof.
