Hi Bolo, Dont know if this helps, but when I do that job externally (engine in) I just use a cold chisel to tap the large nut off, when you purchase the plug kit from Merc it comes with a notched nut to make reinstalling easier.
P.S. dont loose those shims under the ring and your going have to set your gimbal ring hieght again.

Have you considered Changing out the Complete Units, Instead of the 1 part of yours that is Broken ??????????
Changing a Complete Trasom Shield isn't all that hard, as long as you have means to lift the motor..............

Re: need help removing gimball ring

Before you forget about Bondo's offer, you might want to look at the manual first. And don't forget you will have 2, 1-1/4" holes in your transom shield that will have to be tapped and a plastic plug that may or may not leak put in.
Personally I have only had about a 50% success rate when doing them that way, I now just pull the engine. Got tired of doing every thing twice.
Here's some reading you might enjoy.

Section 4B Service Procedures Requiring Major Dissassembly.

hello
yep I am with Don and bondo. pee on that chintzy hole saw and plug kit. it usually leaks. there is not a good way to tighten the nut and most times by the time its that worn out there is other issues as well.
and if you miss the hole with that paper template you have two big usless holes in the transom shield.
good luck and keep posting

Re: need help removing gimball ring

Hi Bolo
Wouldnt argue with these guys about pulling the engine, but when you live in Mercruisers wonderfull flat rate world there is not a hope in heck that you would get the job done in the alotted amount of time.
Tiller arm loose, adjusting nut all the way up, remove horizontal pin retaining bolt & nut (thats the Bolt assy that goes horizontally thru gimbal ring, take that cold chisel and spread gimbal ring apart (just a wee bit), if the pin doesnt drop out & hit you in the toe jump in the boat & give it a tweek with your pry bar, failing that theres a hole in the bottom of Pinwhere you can attach anything you want to give you a a whack at it. (weld in a bolt) Tap in your small slide hammer etc etc.
When you have it all removed R&R that little quad seal ( or it will leak at tiller arm in the boat) Inspect pin if its pitted at all on seal surface toss it (or it will leak),
Last but but most improtant when re-installing new ring be sure you set ring hieght thats the main function of that large nut your trying to remove.
A little teflon tape on those plugs will prevent leaking. Best of luck.

Re: need help removing gimball ring

If you go to that link I provided earlier to section 4B, it will tell you where to put the spacer washers and how measure the clearance.

Yes, you need a new gasket for the transom shield to transom connection. DO NOT US SILICONE. You will need to glue the new rubber seal into the transom shield and cut it to the proper length. Believe it or not that seal has a round cross section when new.

Re: need help removing gimball ring

Contact cement will work, I use Merc's bellows adhesive because I use it all the time at work and it's handy. All you need is something to hold it in the groove till you get the transom shield on the boat, then there's no place it can go.
