I recently saved a 25HP model#252H8D seriel# 3076 from the junk pile, the guy said it died on the water and would not restart so he broke the linkage that keeps it from starting in gear and used the starter motor to "run" the boat to get him back to shore (what don't know what a paddle is?) starter is dead shorted. The motor sat for a year, he then replaced the broken fuel line (why it died in the first place) and used the recoil to start the engine and took it fishing. Killed the impeller and overheated the engine. He put a new impeller in and it still overheated, so he gave up. I have changed the lower unit lube, and put a new impeller in, he did not reinstall the pin that drives the impeller, so it was not even turning, just sitting with the shaft spinning inside of it. I cleaned and gapped the points, cleaned the carb and installed a new fuel pump kit. It started on the 4th pull and didn't run too bad. I adjusted the idle and it runs really good!! Now the bad, it smokes excessively, there is BLACK oil leaking out of the lower unit at the waterpump housing and the head gasket is leaking water. I know I need to replace the head gasket (I need to find one??) and the smoking might be from sitting or I am using the fuel from my 1965 Evinrude 9.5, does the Chrysler use a different mix? And where is the black oil coming from?? Any help would be appreciated!
