HELLO to everyone, just got the engine put back in the boat after a minor overhall. right now i am trying to turn o

ver the engine with the keys but i caunt.

first there is no spark plugs in the engine.

no carb.
no manifold. i just want to turn over the engine with the keys . the starter is good if i jump the starter with a screwdriver it turn over with no problem. i thought the relay slave solinoid was bad so i change it still no crank with keys, if i leave the key on and jump the slave solinoid it turn over, i put my test light on the yellow wire coming from the key switch when i turn the keys it light up so i think the ignition switch is good. one more thing i will do is have someone turn the keys while i test the yello wire in the harnes to see if i get juice that far. i got juice on the coil and the big wire on the starter also has juice. before i change the slave solinoid i use to just a click sound but no start. with the new one i get no nothing. help help.

thanks everyone, for any info

One of the small terminals on the slave solenoid is a ground. If you don't have it hooked up, it won't work.
Might try putting a jumper on it an giving it another try.

thanks don s , i did jump the slave and it did turn over, but caunt turn with the key, i will look at them two small wires to the slave and see if the ground propper, does that litt iginition box have anything to do with cranking/starting. right now it is not ground to anything.

thanks again

Re: need help starting 5.7L

I didn't mean to jump the slave, I meant use a jumper wire and hook the small ground terminal to a ground. It's normally grounded to the intake manifold, but since you don't have it installed it probably isn't grounded. Therefor it won't work.
You really need to get a Merc manual so you can at least use the correct terminology for things. I have no idea in the world what an "AMP BOX" is, but since you did say it was attached to the exhaust I would assume it the ignition module, in which case, without a distibutor installed you don't need the ignition module. The module is item 7 in the image below.
One other thing, why are you trying to turn it over that way, just get or make a remote starter button and hook it directly to the starter so you aren't putting power all through the wiring harness with every thing disconnected. You could end up shorting something out and causing some expensive damage. There is really no reason to need to turn the engine over using the key when it is still not assembled.

Bolo, If I am reading your posts correctly, the "black box" you are talking about, I think is the thunderbolt ignition module. It does not have to be grounded for the starter to work, however I would suggest unplugging it at this stage of the game as well.
If you are getting +12 volts to the slave solenoid coil connection (small wire)when you turn the key to start, and no "click" as Don said it has to be the ground connection....or a bad solenoid. New parts usually work, but not always.
