Motor is a 1993 Johnson 120hp. The timing spec on carb cover says 18degree BTDC,,but I came up with 23,with the boat on land.I pulled all the plugs, all were grounded,,unhooked the throttle cable, held the throttle wide open, and had my dad hit the key.I had a constant 23 degrees, which from what I have read would equate to 27 when the boat is scooting down the lake.I know this motor has been running fine on a houseboat for years, and I have run it 3 times so far on my boat with no problem,,,runs fine, idles fine..Did I do something wrong,,please set me right if I did.

Re: Need help,timing way off!!!

Its because you using the incorrect timing procedure. The engine is in Quick Start mode. You may be able to ground the white/black lead from the port temp sensor and shift the sensors to run mode. The engine needs to be at operating temps and running for 3/7 seconds to to shift from Quick Start to run. When this happens the timing moves about 6 degrees, that is why you are seeing 23 degrees.

Clanton,,,so if I stick the motor in a barrel for a few minutes, and run it and recheck it,I should get the correct readings.Next question,do all motors have the quick start mode. And last but not least,,my brother has a 1995 Rude 115,,can we check the timing the same way.It seems to me that I read somewhere that some motors have static timing, and you cannot use a timing light. Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: Need help,timing way off!!!

All engines do not have Quick Start. Is the 1995 115 a 60 degree engine or a 90 degree engine. The 60 degree is set static, if you have the tool. I use a timing light.
I would set the 120 like this, connect light, start engine, watch timing mark, as engine warms up, and drops out of QS the timing mark will drop back about 6 degrees. You are now looking at idle timing, if this is ok, then check the full advance at 5000 rpms loaded engine. Like in gear, in water.

clanton, Using your methord for setting the timing. Would full advanced be set per spec in the manual (which is 18 degrees BTDC for a 1990 200 Evinrude) or spec minus this 4 degree everyone talks about.

Thanks

Codkiller

You would set it at 18*. Not the -4 degrees. That is for initial cranking settings.
