I have a 1991 laser with a king cobra 460 and a king cobra OMC sterndrive. While boating on the river i had a prop strike at about 10mph. I immediately shut down the engine to chekc the damage. I saw that the prop (SS) showed signs of being hit...slight bend. There was a little smoke from engine compartment and a rubber like smell. I started the engine and engaged forward. The prop would spin but there was very little forward movement Reverse may a clunk noise and i did not try to move in reverse as i had to try to make it back to the dock. I was able to limp along to the dock..took about 10 minutes. The engine did not over heat.
Now I am wondering how do i troubleshoot the problem. I am very mechanical but i have limited experience with boats in this area. Rebuilding the sterndrive would not be a hard task for me. I want to try and pinpoint the problem before i start tearing into the sterndrive. I pulled the prop hoping there was a key...nope. I have searched the internet and came up with:
Gears striped in sterndrive
Broken Shaft in stern drive
shift cable out of adjustment
broken drive shaft
broken coupler at engine

Could someone point me in a direction to troubleshoot this?

Thanks for any help

You will get more help in the I/O section.Do you have a spare prop.
You could see how it operates with a known good prop.Is it possible the clunk in reverse was simply the clutch dog ingageing?
Speaking generically most props have a cushion hub that gives when you strike something these hubs do fail causing what they call a spun hub.
The hub slips as you apply more power.
Was this a simple strike or did the outdrive kick up violently?
