Sorry for the cross post. I realized i posted this in the wrong section.

I have a 1991 laser with a king cobra 460 and a king cobra OMC sterndrive. While boating on the river i had a prop strike at about 10mph. I immediately shut down the engine to chekc the damage. I saw that the prop (SS) showed signs of being hit...slight bend. There was a little smoke from engine compartment and a rubber like smell. I started the engine and engaged forward. The prop would spin but there was very little forward movement Reverse may a clunk noise and i did not try to move in reverse as i had to try to make it back to the dock. I was able to limp along to the dock..took about 10 minutes. The engine did not over heat.
Now I am wondering how do i troubleshoot the problem. I am very mechanical but i have limited experience with boats in this area. Rebuilding the sterndrive would not be a hard task for me. I want to try and pinpoint the problem before i start tearing into the sterndrive. I pulled the prop hoping there was a key...nope. I have searched the internet and came up with:
Gears striped in sterndrive
Broken Shaft in stern drive
shift cable out of adjustment
broken drive shaft
broken coupler at engine

Could someone point me in a direction to troubleshoot this?

Thanks for any help

Re: Need Help troubleshooting OMC King Cobra Sterndrive

Good Morning Pat:

There was a little smoke from engine compartment and a rubber like smell

Clue that it is coupler

The prop would spin but there was very little forward movement
Coupler again

Rebuilding the sterndrive would not be a hard task for me.
Not to be an arse but there are few people around who have the tools, parts, and the know how to rebuild these drives.

I hope you can find the parts to repair but this is one of these worst combos, that being a 460 king Cobra, to find certain parts for.

If you can find the coupler........... Last I seen they were around the $500 range.

Re: Need Help troubleshooting OMC King Cobra Sterndrive

Thanks....how could i verify that it is the coupler? IT is difficult to see behind the block. Can I remove the sterndrive to check it?? I understand that the engine will need to come out to replace it....that the only way?
I need to find a good picture of one...and hopefully it is still available if that is what it is.

I want to trya and verify the problem before i start tearing into anything.

Regarding rebuilding the sterndrive i was just making basic assumtions based on my 15yrs auto mech. experience rebuilding many auto and manual transmissions. I understand that special toosl may be required as well as manuals and such. Of course i have never done one so who knows.

Thank you for your help.

Seems like it would need to be a coupler or possibly a spun prop hub. But the rubber smell from the engine compartment definately suggests coupler.
