i have got an 80 horse, that was supposedly rebuilt. Upon getting this motor back I ran it the first time for 10 minutes or so and retrailered. I had no problems, good power, response and the like. I took it out the next day and it went dead in the water after about five minutes. Would not re-start and acted like it was flooded. I checked the plugs and they looked good, no fuel on them and none in the motor. i put the boat back in the water the next day and the motor would not plane the boat off, no power. Got pis**d and retrailered. Bought new plugs anyway and waited a few days. The problem now is that the motor will start in fast idle and once you go into either reverse or forward the motor dies. It will restart and once the motor is put in gear it stalls. Then out of the clear blue it will run for 15 or so seconds and the whole process begins again. I am afraid that once I get this problem diagnosed and hopefully fixed, I will have torn the starter up from all this crap and it will need replacing. I got mad enough tonight that I started really looking at everything that I could easily access and noticed that the ground on the starter as well as every screw on the CDI as well as that ground was loose. I tightened them all up, but I know that this probably is not the culprit.I am installing new NGK's tomorrow, but what in the hell is going on? One other thing I noticed was that both the top and bottom carb do open and close together but there is hardly no room for error on the control end from wide open on both the controls and the carbs to just barely pulling back on the controls and both carbs shut off. I know this is vague but surely someone has got a clue or can tell me where to start.
Thanks

Actually, your problem probably was those loose connections. Hopefully the switchbox survived.

Linkage-wise, the spark advance does most of the speeding-up in the first half of throttle or so. The carbs open only a little at first. They open fully rather quickly after that.

Loose connections did not solve the issue. I checked the new plugs after the motor stalled and they had a little oil and gas one them. Put 6.3 gallons of gas in the tank and added 16 oz of oil to try and lean it up a bit, but tha didn't help either. The motor has a hard time starting and when it starts and is put under a load it stalls. What would excess fuel around the carbs mean? they look almost sopping wet.

before you do anything else, check your compression on all cylinders, and the spark with a $10 spark tester from the auto parts store. with low compression they can idle, but have no power.

It sounds like the carbs had storage crud and the new fuel cut some loose, now you have carb to clean, don't try to run it much or the lean condition will burn it down

Bought a spark tester yesterday from Advance Auto. I also checked the compression. I had a good strong spark on all cylinders, and the compression was as follows #1 - 130 , #2 - 125 , #3 - 123, # 4 - 130.

I also bought a couple cans of Carb cleaner and some sea foam. I started the motor and soaked the hell out of the carbs. The motor smoked badly while this was going on. It stalled a few times because of the cleaner, but I started it up and soaked them down some more. After the smoke cleared the motor idled better than it did three weeks ago before all this crap started happening. Of course I won't now or sure what has happened if anything until this national winter freeze chit leaves and I can actually put the boat in water and see how it acts under load.
But for right now I want to thank all of you guys for at least getting me headed in the right direction.

Peace
