Hello, I have 1972 9.5 HP Johnson (9R72M).
It has issue on high speed when forward gear disengages.
I think it needs adjustment for shift rod.
This is my first motor of this "cumbersome" design and I do not have original manual.
Can someone advise on how properly to do that?

Thanks in advance.

Could be an issue with the prop itself.----Is it a jerking feeling as if you hit a log?----I would take lower unit apart to inspect clutch dog.

I just rebuilt LU and a lot of other things. It runs fine in the tank, but first boat test shows this issue.
I do see this bolt (see pic) that looks like gear shift adjustment, but want to make sure I do not mess up anything.

Ooops! looks like picture can not be loaded to this site.

no real adjustments on the shift rod but if the shift rod link (connector) (down near the impeller housing is not properly set with both bolts snugged in the rod recesses then anything goes.

to bad can't post pics....

see page 6.3 shift rod " connector" part #52
see also some... adjustments can be done top side with the shifter handle neutral lock
"This motor, like many, has a gear lockout feature where the motor needs to be in neutral or forward to be able to start. "

Thank you for the links.
LeRoy's article has the same picture I tried to post showing how to fine adjust shift rod.
I think I am moving in right direction.

Thank you for your help.

OR maybe, I am wrong :
Quote:
If you need to make any adjustment in the position of the main shafting lever OR to adjust the above mentioned rev limiter, this is done using the bolt indicated by the red arrow. Or if you can not get it adjusted, and have to start it in Neutral, then remove the linkage bar.

However this adjustment does nothing for gearbox shifting, where you may have worn clutch dog ears or mating gear notches.

the upper adjustments act as a safety feature for starting in gear or high rpms nothing to do with shifting itself. they also allow line up of the shift handle with the r-n-f positions

did u check the shift not connector down below see fig 6.5 on PAGE 6.5

There is an adjustment for the shift function under the hood.----Fairly easy to see how that is done.

Operate the shift lever.----See the parts that move up there.----Then look for the bolt that allows adjustment.
