i replace every cable on the top half and everything is tight and ready for water but once i put it in i was able to move in reverse away from the dock but once i shifted to forward the motor would rev but no movement then when i shifted back to neutral the motor jumped and when i shifted to reverse it would no longer mover so i paddled back in and put back on trailer

i have talked to a couple of people and would like more info or suggestions on what might be wrong.

i was told that one of the gears may be worn down or broke in the lower unit and need to be flipped or replaced

if so i need a diagram or instructions on how to remove the lower unit and also where if any place i would be able to find parts for a motor this old

thanks to anyone with any info that can help me

i have done a lot of work on vehicles, motors and transmissions
but this is the first boat motor that i will be working on

There are lots of CD manuals on e bay for cheap money ..scans of the the original so good reliable information....could be as simple as selector adjustment...circlip come off (had that) ..Tip for Novice ..do not remove the screw near the front of the gearbox nose ..its the cross pin for the selector and you wont get it back !!!

Sounds like a linkage adjustment problem. Did you recently remove the lower unit? If you did, and unscrewed the linkage it may be off a hair. I find this adjustment to be very very finicky, so remove the two coweling pieces to uncover the linkage, and proceed slowly. My first time adjusting took me an hour to get forward and reverse right  Just remember a full turn of a nut could put it out of gear, and vise versa.
